During the winter, water might’ve found its way into a small opening in your driveway, frozen up and created giant heaves by the time spring rolled around. If that’s the case, it's better to repair it now than to let it sit any longer. Here are some tips on driveway repair:
Preparation
Before you repair any driveway, some measures need to be taken beforehand. Pull any weeds that are in the crack and then spray it down with water. After it has dried a little bit, apply weed killer to help prevent the weeds from growing back. After that, fill sand into the crack until it reaches a quarter of an inch below the rim. Tamp all of the sand down to make sure that it’s solid.
Concrete
Concrete driveways can just be repaired with more concrete. Buy a bag of concrete mix and follow the directions for what the mixture should be. Apply with a trowel and make sure that when you are finished, it is level with the rest of your driveway.
Asphalt
The mixtures for asphalt are not quite as easy as they are for concrete. Since you can’t exactly get a paver to come to your home and give you fresh asphalt you will have to use equivalent products depending on the width of your crack. If it is less than a half inch, you will need asphalt crack filler. Any wider than that will require asphalt cold-patch. In either case, follow the instructions on the packaging.
